Hello YACsters! We will be playing Twister at our January Cafe Ole, but the library does not own enough games. If you can bring in a Twister game, please let me know. If we cannot get enough boards together, unfortunately we will be forced to choose another activity for the evening. Thank you!

Awesome meeting alst night, YAACsters! I hope everyone had as much fun as I did at the holiday party. If you weren't there, not only did you miss out on teh fun, but you also missed getting your lock-in forms. Stop by the library to pick one up. The lock-In forms are due back at the next YAC meeting, January 15, NO EXCEPTIONS! We are super excited about the lock-in. You guys made some great suggestions last night. Battle of the Air Bands

Hey all you rock stars: Thanks to Nick M., Alyssa &Phoumany, Lisa, Bridget, and Megan, and Jimmy for participating in Battle of the Air Bands!!! You guys and girls did a fabulous job! Their pictures were taken by a reporter from the Southtown newspaper, so they are famous!

Monopoly champs

Way to go Selena and Neal- they are our latest Monopoly champs! Miss Lowe says you guys won by a lot-no one else was even close! See me for your special prize. Now that Tuesday's Great Games series is over- we were wondering if you (as in all you teens out there) would want more of this type of program in the future. Would you like different games, and if so, which ones? Do you like the tournament-style way of playing or would you like it to be more informal? We would really like your input on this, so feel free to comment or just tell us! I had a great time doing this program with you all- thanks for coming!

Lock-In Theme

Looks like we have a winner for the lock-in theme: Willy Wonka! Please start thinking of ideas for activities related to this. You can post them here or save them for the next YAC meeting. We will be discussing the lock-in then.

SuperYACsters

Thanks for bringing in your canned food for the TP Food Pantry. So far we have collected over 300 items. When I was dropping off the food at the food pantry, there was an elderly woman there picking up food. She heard that I was from the library (representing the teens) and made a special effort to say thank you to me and to you. It was obvious that she needed the help. Now, I know that you all care about helping others, but when you actually do something, like make the effort to bring in food, it shows! We have one more turn-in for the drive on Tuesday, December 11 at our YAC holiday party. Please try to bring in anything you can- who knows, maybe we can hit the 500 mark!

A Big TY!

Hi All! A big pat on the back to all of you who brought in food for the TP Food Pantry! With just one turn-in (there are 2 more at the next YAC meetings), you managed to collect over 200 food items! Team #1 ( Phoumany, Alyssa M, Nick M, Alyssa G,and Kyle B) is in first place but that doesn't mean that your team can't pull ahead next time. Each and every canned good you contribute makes a difference. With Thanksgiving and winter right around the corner, the folks at the Food Pantry and their recipients will be very, very grateful for your help. Thank you!

YAC Food Drive

Hi everyone. Don't forget that the next YAC meeting on Tuesday, October 16 is the first turn-in for the TP Food Pantry Food Drive. Bring in as many non-perishable foods as you can- cans or boxed goods. Remember, we'll count the number of items each team brings in at the next three YAC meetings and the team that brings in the most wins fabulous prizes and our undying adoration! Really just a big thanks! If you missed the first meeting, no worries- you can still get in on the action! I can't wait to see how much we can do-together- to help those who arent'as fortunate as we are.

Creepy Classics

On October 24 at 7pm, we are having storyteller Grant Fitch here at the library to present dramatic retellings of classic spooky tales, which are sure to creep into your dreams! The stories are really good and this is not the same show he does for the little kids. Only a few of you have signed up, but I hope more of you do. You can register here or by calling the library. 1. If you are desiring community service hours for any reason (other than a court appointed one), we are now taking school year volunteers. Please stop by the library to pick up an application. We have a wide variety of opportunities; there is sure to be one to meet your needs!

2. If you are in 9-12 grades and have completed 100 hours of community service in the last year, please let me know. Good things could come your way!

August and Autumn

Hey there YACsters! You have probably noticed that the blog has been pretty quiet lately. We are hard at work getting things ready for the fall. The fall brochures are ready at the Youth Services desk, so be sure to come on by to pick one up.
The first YAC meeting will be on September 18, so be sure to mark your calendars for that one. Remember that at the first meeting of the year, we will have elections. So if you are a returning YAC member, think about running for office.
Your postcards should arrive around September 11, but don't feel like you have to wait to RSVP until then. Sebastian already did! You'll still get a postcard, though.

Summertime Fun

Hey Yacsters! We're so glad to see all of you coming to the YA programs this summer! We have some fun programs coming up this fall too-which you can hear about at our first YAC meeting in Sept. (Date to be announced later) So, think about bringing some "non-library" folk (potential new members) to that meeting and start the year out right! Sports programs

Hi fellow yacsters: Thank you for all your comments about sports programs. I have been keeping those in mind. On that line, what kind of activities would you like to see us do at the sports programs? Keep in mind that we are at a library, so some of the activities we do are a little limited. However, we have been able to play a lot of sports games and do crafts, have trivia contests etc. If you could rate those different activities that we have done at a sports program, how would you rate them on a 1-3 scale(with 1 being the least and 3 being the best)?

YA Program Sign-up

Just a reminder- if you want to attend any of the YA programs here at the TPPL, you need to sign up at the YS reference desk- either in person, by phone or blog. (The exception to this is Cafe Ole.) We usually have a limit of how many teens can attend because we need to order supplies, food, etc... ahead of time. Sometimes a program doesn't fill up and you can still get in- but, you should call first so that you aren't turned away at the door. Drop-ins are always welcome, just be aware that you might not get in!

Around the World

Hi fellow yacsters: I was wondering what kind of ideas you have for our Around the World program, should we continue it this fall. What kinds of places would you like to travel to? What kind of activities would you like to do? This past winter, we traveled to Greece, Egypt, and Iceland. We did all types of activities such as: creating the Greece Parthenon, playing Egyptian bingo, and making duct tape viking helmets.

FTT Crew Meeting

Hello yacsters: I just wanted to remind you about the next crew meeting(s) for Fairy Tale Theatre. They will be on Friday May 18th and May 25th, from 6-8:30 p.m. I hope that we can get a lot accomplished! I would like to see us finish painting the boards white on May 18th, and also start sketching the scenes. On May 25th, I would like to see us finish the sketching and start painting. The Lock-In

The lock-in theme will be 1920's! So, come dressed up as your favorite gangster or moll or fashionable flapper. Letters will be sent home in the next few weeks to eligible YAC members, so keep your eyes peeled.

Nascar Night

Hi fellow yacsters: Don't forget to attend Nascar Night on Tuesday, May 8th, from 7-8:30 p.m. There will be "racing" food, crafts, and games. Even if you're not crazy about NASCAR, come out for some fun anyway!! (Don't forget that Fairy Tale Theatre Auditions are the next Tuesday, May 15 at 5:30 p.m.)

Ideas for Battle of the Bands

Hi fellow yacsters: Thinking ahead to the fall, we were wondering if you would like to see Battle of the Air Bands come back this year. We were thinking of having different caterogies for this year's fun competition. We were thinking of having a battle between comedians, were you would tell jokes. We also thought of having a battle between different kinds of music, for example, rap, rock, or country music. We are open to different ideas though. Last year we just had one competition based off of rock music. This year, I would like to see it expanded into three different programs, one on rock, country/rap, and jokes. Let us know!

Ta -Ta Team Build-It

We also had our last Team Build-It for the year. Toothpicks and marshmallows turned out to be a great building and eating material! The awesome team of Julie D. and Elly H. were tied with the ever-creative team of Brooke M. and Selena P. for first place. Those four will be dining at Culvers very soon, I'm sure. A few unusual structures were created that had the judges laughing- just ask the Queen of Schmooze- she knows how to sell it! I hope you all had fun and remember to check out this program again next year- also in a new and unusual form. See you at Cinco de Mayo on Tuesday, May 1st!

Bake-off Bye Bye

Well, it's sad, but true. The last bake-off of the year was over on Friday, April 20! Even with a few of our talented teens absent, everyone, once again, pulled off some really eggstra-special creations! Round #4 had ties in 1st place- Alyssa G/Phoumany and Ashley Gregor - and also in 2nd place- Janet K. and Selena/Kelly! Coloring eggs was a lot of fun! Congratulations to the team of Alyssa G. and Phoumany P. for earning the grand prize for all 4 rounds! The talented team won Simon gift cards. Both Ashley Gregor and Caitlin Town gave them a run for their money. Watch out for them next year! Everyone who participated over the 4 months did a great job and I hope to see you next year. Who knows what form the Bake-off will assume next time- could be interesting- even scary! HA!

Cinco de Mayo

Last YAC Meeting of the Year

Hi fellow yacsters: Just wanted to let you know that the last YAC meeting of the year was a lot of fun. Hopefully, you didn't miss it. Not only did we get our new YAC t-shirts, but we also ate cupcakes, presents, and ice cream. We also viewed a slideshow of this year's activities. At Cafe Ole, we had a soda can tower contest. Miss Lowe and Mrs. Lukich even competed with each other, and I have to say, Miss Lowe was the winner! We also played pin the glasses on the librarian. Check out the pics!

Last Bake-off!

You won't want to miss the season finale of the fun and fabulous Bake-off! Round #4 is this Friday- April 20 at 7pm. The grand prize (Simon gift card) is still up for grabs -many of the teams can still win! This last competition is themed "Spring" and you are required to bring 1 dozen hard-boiled eggs. BIG HINT HERE: Think about what you might be doing with hard boiled eggs...gee, could it be colored eggs... or something related to spring ... anyway, please think ahead so that you won't be scrambling your eggs at the last minute! Don't forget, you can also just come and watch these oh-so creative people at work! Hope to see you there!

Birthday Cake Bake-off- Results

Thanks to all who came to round #3 of the bake-off. I especially liked that everyone brought different types of cake and the judges really raved about Selena's strawberry-flavored cake. Believe me, they all tasted great! The top three finishers were #1-Phoumany/Alyssa G, #2- Kaitlin F., and #3- Emily K. There is still one round left on April 20th themed "Spring". You'll need to register at the YS reference desk and bring 1 dozen hard boiled eggs. I really hope you will come and participate or just come and watch the big finish! See you soon!

Bake -off Round #3

Hello Bakers! A reminder that round #3 is this Friday (March 23) at 7 pm and the theme is birthday. You should be bringing a 13 x 9 cake in the pan with NO FROSTING. Start thinking up your strategy now, so you can be ready to go. And if you didn't get into the program this time, feel free to come and watch - lots of good birthday cake to eat afterwards! Yummy! Iceland: Around the World

Hi fellow yacsters: Just wanted to remind you about Iceland: Around the World on Tuesday, March 20 from 7-8:30 p.m. We will be exploring Iceland by making our own viking hats out of duct tape! We will also be doing some other cool activities. I won't give the snack away either, but it's really good. Hope to see you there!

Crew meeting for FTT

Hi fellow yacsters: Hope you all had a good time at YAC on Tuesday! Your rock star costumes were out of this world!(Ha ha!-get it-Space is the summer reading theme.) I'm glad I got to be there. Anyway, I wanted to remind you about the crew meeting for FTT on Saturday, April 7th, from 1-4 p.m. We will be painting, so make sure that you wear old clothes. If anyone else wants to join, you can still sign up here or let me know by calling the library at 532-0160. Remember, just because you sign up for crew doesn't mean you have to be in the play. Extra Super-Galactic Fun

Thanks to all who came to the Smash Hit Saturday showing of Star Wars! It was a good time for all- even making flat-Yodas was kinda fun...and, just so you all know- Kyle Petrauskas really knows his Star Wars trivia! Nice going! Also, thanks to Phoumany, Darouny, Nick , and Alyssa for a great birthday cake! I had the last piece just to myself! Hope to see all you Yacsters at the rest of our spring programs!

YAC Rock Star Night

Hi fellow yacsters: If you missed the trading cards program, you missed out on a lot of fun! We created a lot of different trading cards, anywhere from tinkerbell to wrestling. Let us know if you would want another edition of the trading card program in the summer! Also, I hope to see you Tuesday, March 13 at 5 p.m. for YAC! It's Rock Star Night, so don't forget to wear your favorite rock star clothes! Stay for Cafe Ole, were we will be hosting karaoke night! Hope to see you there!

Summer Reading

Thanks to the hard work of the Summer Reading Committee, we were able to start planning the Summer Reading Program last night. When you come to the YAC meeting next week, you will hear more details, but I can tell you now that it will be really awesome! We didn't have a chance to plan everything, though, and are looking for help with a few details. We will discuss this at the YAC meeting, so if you will be there, bring your ideas with you. If you can't make it to the meeting, you can post your ideas here on the blog!
What we need:
1. a slogan. Usually we have a catchy phrase for our summer reading program. This year's theme is space.
2. Large Prize ideas. Last year we gave away on iPod. Should we do the same thing again? What prizes would motivate you to join summer reading?
3. What programs would you like to see this summer? More of something we already have or something entirely new? Let us know!

March Bake-Off

The March Bake-Off is full! That means that if you are not already signed up for it, we will have to put you on the waiting list. If you aren't sure if you are signed up or not, please call the library and we will be happy to tell you. I cannot post the sign-ups here on the blog.

Trading Cards program

Sugar Rush at the Bake-Off

With a lot of talent and a ton of valentine candy, the contestants in Friday's Bake-off were all at their very best! Everyone managed to create something unique and fun and eat a bunch of candy at the same time- oh, and I am not complaining! The top three finishers were (in order)- Caitlin T. (a newcomer to YAC I hope), the team of Brooke M. and Angie R., and the team of Alyssa G. and Phoumany P!!! Congratulations to everyone! You can check out the standings on the YA bulletin board anytime. It's not too late to join the fun- round #3 is Friday, March 23. Sign up at the reference desk (don't forget because the program fills up) and remember to bring a 13 x 9 size cake (no frosting-just the cake in the pan). Please call us with any questions- see ya!

Team Build-It

Just a reminder that Team Build-It is coming up soon! On Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7pm, teams will be competing against each other to build awesome, jaw dropping structures with Legos! There is still room to join us if you haven't already signed up... we'd love to have you join us!

Trading Cards program

Hi fellow yacsters: Hope you are doing well! Sorry we didn't get to see you at the last YAC meeting because of the snow! I want to make sure that you know about our Trading Cards program. If you like trading sports, Magic, Yu-gi-oh? or other cards, I suggest you come to the trading cards program on Friday, March 9 from 7-8:30 p.m. We will create our own trading cards. Hurry and sign up (starting March 5th) because the program is only open to the first 12 who register. See you there!

Lack of YAC

Okay, YACsters. As you probably know by now, the library was closed on Tuesday and we missed our meeting. Unfortunately, we will not be able to reschedule our meeting. So here's what you need to know:

1. Directors for Fairy Tale Theatre have been chosen. The next Fairy Tale Theatre Committee meeting will be on Friday, March 2 at 6:30 pm. We will discuss directorial duties and future meeting dates.
2. We are setting up a Summer Reading Committee. If you would like to help plan Summer Reading at the library, please come at 7pm on Tuesday, March 6. For those of you unfamiliar with Summer Reading, it is a program at the library where we give you prizes for reading books. The committee will discuss the prizes, the name of the program, and other things you want to do this summer. We would love to have help with this!
3. The Chicago Wolves are coming to the TPPL! A Wolves hockey player, to be named later, will be at the library on Wednesday, February 28 at 7pm. All are welcome at this program.
4. Remember to sign up for programs this month!

Bake-off Success!

Just wanted to let you know how much fun the bake-off was tonight! 15 brave souls came and really showed us their stuff. They brought their cupcakes and along with the materials provided-choc chips, coconut, marshmallows, frosting, and pretzels- they whipped up some awesome creations with the winners being the team of Alyssa G. and Phoumany! They created Snoopy on top of his dog house in the winter! They even put lights on his roof! Congratulations to all... everyone is in the running for the grand prize- even if you didn't come this time. Remember to sign up for the next one on Feb. 23!

Fun at the lock-in/Bake-off

I hope you all had as good a time at the lock-in as I did! Thanks to the lock-in committee for coming up with such a great theme and activities. I hope you all got caught up on your sleep- I know I'm still tired! Kudos to Miss Lowe, Mrs. Lukich, and Mrs. Kanjo for making this such fun. Hope to see all of you at the next group of programs- this Friday is the Bake-off with a Twist... if you are already registered, don't forget your 1 dozen cupcakes!

There are exciting and funny awards to be won for your ensemble- that's your outfit- so put on some Ritz! There's an exciting new program coming soon to the TPPL near you! If you like to bake (or eat baked goods) and like having fun, check out the new version of the Bake-off! It's a bit like an "Iron-Chef" version of baking where you or you with a partner will create a dessert like no other.
