Hi everyone! Get a jump on the new year at Girls Read on Tuesday, January 5
at 7pm. If you want, you can pre-read "Absolutely Maybe" by Lisa Yee. We don't normally have an assigned book, but this time we thought it would be fun. And, if you don't want to read it, just come anyway and talk about what you are reading. We will also talk about what we want to do for upcoming programs!

Lock-In

In case you missed the last meeting, we decided on the lock-in theme. Glow in the Dark!! All of the librarians are super excited and we are already hatching up great plans for the night. We can't wait!

YAC meeting

Hi fellow yacsters: Just wanted to remind you about Game Play: the Cards edition this Tuesday, November 3rd from 4-5 p.m. We will learn a couple new card games and/or play whatever card games you want! Fairy Tale Theatre

I mentioned at the last YAC meeting that I would put up our choices for next summer's FTT play here. I will write the title and the description, as included in the play catalog. Please let us know what you think in the comments to this post.

Get Smart

Smart is off on a bizarre new casse in which he must stop the sinister organization known as KAOS from their most shameful plot. Their plan this time is to prove their power by blowing up the Statue of Liberty! This is too much, and Smart springs (or should we say stumbles) into action. Magnificently assisted by beautiful Agent 99, Smart proceeds from one gigantic blunder to another. Each, however, somehow turning into a master stroke. It's filled with easy to stage visual surprises that make the show exciting and enjoyable for the cast and a delight for the audience.

The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe

This dramatization of CS Lewis' classic faithfully recreates the magic and mystery of Aslan, the great lion, his struggle with the White Witch, and the adventures of four children who inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into never to be forgotten Narnia. The intense action features chases, duels, and escapes as the witch is determined to keep Narnia in her control and end the reign of Aslan. All the memorable episodes are represented in this exciting dramatization. Easily staged, the play may be presented without intermission or in two short acts if desired.

The Trial of Goldilocks

In rhyme, mime, and mirth, this exciting comedy examines the familiar fairy tale from three points of biew: the traditional, the Bear's, then Goldilocks. Guilty or innocent? Was the young girl a selfish, spoiled brat, intruding where she didn't belong? Or was she the victim of 3 conniving bears and their animal band of hoods in the woods? Complete with a hard of hearing judge, a harried clerk, two comic lawyers, and a jury (of any size) which gets involved int he action as tables, chairs, beds, and forest animals. This charming comedy is perfect for performers of all ages. One Simple Set.

The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf

The wolf: villain or victim? The 3 pigs: innocent or at fault? The Jurors (Miss Muffet, Bo Peep, Cinderella, and Humpty Dumpty, to name a few): solid citizens or characters with a apst? And what about Judge Wise O Al? Is justice on his side or does he have something to hide?A true ensemble piece, this delightful comedy will appeal to audiences and performers of all ages. One simple set.

An affectionate spoof of the private eye thrillers of the 1940s and 1950s. Sammy Scoop is a private investigator in the tradition of his grandfather, Samuel Shovel, and his father, Sam Spade. Sammy faces the biggest challenge of his illustrious career with the sudden fall and disappearance of the jolly Humpty Dumpty, who apparently had no enemies. But Sammy and his sidekick, Alice from Dallas, soon come up with a list of suspects who had motive and, perhaps, opportunity. Surprise ending. One Simple Set.

Once Upon a Shoe or the Rhymes and Mimes of Mother Goose and Her Traveling Troubadours

Mother Goose sadly announces to her children that they must leave their home a large, comfortable show - and move to an old sneaker across the tracks. The children decide to put on a show to save their shoe, and proceed to enact 8 of mom's best poems. In the audience is a famous movie producer and of course, he loves the show! The shoe is saved and Mother Goose and her troupe are off to Hollywood.

Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs

All the characters you love are here: Snow White, the 7 little, funny men, the absent minded King, Bella (his new wife-part witch, part queen), her servant, and the handsome, conceited Prince Goodhearted. There are some new characters too, created for this dramatic version: Snow White's animal friends, and the fascinating Miss Time, whose Father, Father Time, started the whole Once Upon a Time business. There are many intriguing new staging effects which are theatrically exciting but so simpy to do.

4th Battle of the Air Bands

Hi fellow yacsters: Don't miss out on the 4th Battle of the Air Bands!!! Come gather your group and fake instruments and come to the library on Friday, October 23rd from 7-8 p.m. Prizes will be awarded. If your band knows what "songs" they will be singing, please let Mrs. Lukich know at 708-532-0160 ext 5726. A trivia contest will also take place. You can sign up here.

Halloween Make-Up

Don't forget to sign up for our Halloween Make-Up program. It is on Tuesday, October 20, at 7:00 pm. It is going to be completely awesome! You will learn how to do the most convincing scary makeup ever! Each participant will also get a small bag of makeup to keep at the end of the program. Don't miss out!

Youth Leaders for Literacy Available to Young Volunteers Who Inspire and Encourage Reading
Youth Service America is partnering with the National Education Association to once again offer Youth Leaders for Literacy grants to children and youth, ages 5-25, who offer innovative ways to increase literacy skills and appreciation for reading among their peers. Youth can submit their applications through October 30, 2009.
Youth Leaders for Literacy will award 30 young people from across the U.S. each with $500 grants and $500 in books from the Pearson Foundation. Successful projects will be youth-led and address an established literacy need in the applicant's school or community. The projects will follow the framework of YSA's Semester of Service initiative, launching on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in January and culminating on Global Youth Service Day, April 23-25. An activity should also occur during the NEA's Read Across America Day on March 2.

Countdown to YAC pt 5

The fifth reason, and the one you might find to be the most compelling, to attend the YAC meeting tomorrow, is the LOCK-IN. This overnight at the library, held twice a year, is for active YAC members only and is NOT to be missed. If you haven't been to one, you should talk to a current YAC member to find out what the deal is with the lock-in. Some past activities have included: frisby golf, taste of terror (like fear factor), pudding eating contest, jello eating contest, relay races, photo-scavenger hunt, and so much more. The next lock-in will be in January. Come to YAC so you won't be left out!

Countdown to YAC pt 4

Reason #4 why you should not miss out on the very first YAC meeting of this school year: It is election night! That's right - we will be having our very own board elections. There are 4 positions to run for: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Special Ops Coordinator. We may also appoint a new bouncer as the last one graduated and is off at college.
If you want to take a bigger roll in YAC, running for a board seat is a great way to do so! Just a few things that you should know.

• Board members must be in high school
• You must be a returning YAC member. (This means you can't run for office at your very first YAC meeting)
• You will actually have responsibilities!

Join us on Tuesday, September 15, at 6pm for election night fun, with pizza, friends, and fun!

Girls Read-In- Special Event!

If you like to read and hang out with friends, you won't want to miss this special event! For 3 whole hours, right here at the TPPL, you can bring a book, pillow, and a blanket/sleeping bag and hang out...oh, and munch on snacks. The Girls Read-In is on Saturday, September 19 from 1pm - 4pm. Don't forget to register online or at the YS reference desk- because we can only accomodate 25 teens. And, if you want, you can bring a book or books to swap at the end of the program. Hope to see you there!

Countdown to YAC pt3

The third wonderful reason to attend YAC next week is friends! Hopefully by now, you have made some "library friends". These are people you met through the library that you don't go to school with. Maybe you would not have met them if not for the library! Next week is your chance to see them and get caught up on what happened over the summer, how the new school year is going, blah blah blah. And there is always the chance that you will meet some new people and make new library friends.
Remember, the YAC meeting is next Tuesday, September 15, at 6pm.

Rebecca Caudill Club

I just want to let everyone know who missed the last Rebecca Caudill Club that the book that was chosen by the club to read for the October 9th meeting is All the Lovely Bad Ones, by Mary Downing Hahn. She is the author of many other stories, including the Old Willis Place and Deep and Dark and Dangerous. Here is more information about All the Lovely Bad Ones.

The 2nd reason you should come to YAC next Tuesday, September 15, at 6pm is that it's fun! We eat pizza, as mentioned yesterday, and talk a lot. And while you are having fun you also get to help plan what teens do at the library! Don't miss out!

Countdown to YAC

That's right - only 1 more week until YAC! I will be counting down to YAC all week. Each day I will give 1 reason you should not miss this YAC meeting (like you really need me to convince you!). So, without furhter ado:

Reason #1 you should attend the YAC meeting on 9/15
PIZZA
We will be serving cheese pizza from Aurelio's. The pizza is made fresh and delivered right at the start of the meeting. Each person is allowed 2 squares of pizza and 1 can of pop. There will probably be other snacks available as well. This is really meant as a snack, not your real dinner, but what a snack! Aurelio's pizza is Mrs. Bailey's absolute favorite and Mrs. Lukich and Miss Lowe are pretty fond of it as well. So, if you want some FREE pizza, don't miss out on next week's YAC meeting!

YAC election

Just to remind you all that the next YAC meeting (on 9/15) will also be the YAC election. If you are thinking about running for office, please keep the following rules in mind:
- Officers are nominated and seconded by another YAC member in order to be on the ballot.
- Officers are elected by the highest amount of votes.
- The term of each officer is one year.
-Nominees should be in returning YAC members in High School

One rule has been changed. You do not need to be present in order to be elected. However, you do have to have sent someone to nominate you in your absence. That means you can't nominate someone who didn't come to the meeting if that person does not know that you are nominating them.

All officers must try to come to every meeting. Officers can only miss three meetings or their position will be reassigned.

Officers and Their Duties
President:
- Will mediate every YAC meeting using the agenda provided by the librarian.
- Will maintain order at each meeting.
- Will serve as a positive example to other members by participating in YAC events.
Vice President:
- Will act as president if the president is absent.
- Will help the president maintain order at the meetings.
- Will serve as a positive example to other members by participating in YAC events.
Secretary:
- Will take minutes at every meeting and read the minutes from the previous meeting.
- Will serve as a positive example to other members by participating in YAC events.
Special Events Coordinator:
- Will help coordinate and brainstorm about special YAC events (i.e. Field Trips and Lock-Ins.) and present them at the meetings for discussion.
- Will serve as a positive example to other members by participating in YAC events.

New Newts

If you haven't yet, please come in to meet our new friends, the newts. Here you see Rupert, our largest newt. We also have Iggy and Nigel, who are quite a bit thinner. You can tell them apart because Iggy has an I on his tummy. They are REALLY cool, though.

Don't forget to come to our job skills workshop this Thursday, April 30 at 7:00 pm. If you are looking for a job this summer or think you might look for one soon, this is a great workshop. I just went through the presentation with the people who will be speaking and it is *amazing*. You will really learn a lot from this. Don't miss out!

Lock-In and Field Trip

The lock-in and field trip forms were handed out at last night's YAC meeting. Remember, to be eligible for these, you must have attended 3 or more YAC meetings this school year. If you did not (or aren't sure if you did), you need to talk to Miss Lowe. The forms are available at the YS desk for anyone who didn't get one (or for those of you who left theirs at Cafe Ole).

Important things to know:

• The lock-in is on July 17.
• The theme is beach.
• The field trip is on July 28.
• We are going to have a picnic outside the library and play games.
